A specific moment

This conversation is likely worth having if two or more of these are true.

You are within 24 months of military retirement or recently retired.
The SBP election has not been modeled with your spouse's complete survivor-income picture.
Your TSP, old accounts, and new 401(k) have never been compared together.
A civilian offer, bonus, equity package, or healthcare election is approaching.
Pension, VA income, and civilian pay will overlap in the same tax year.
Your CPA, attorney, HR team, and adviser each see only one piece.

If none apply, the free Blindspot Assessment may be a better starting point.

Find My Blind Spots
What the call does

You should know four things when the call ends.

This is not a free financial plan. It is a focused first look at the handoff.

  1. 01What locks nextWhich decision is nearest to becoming difficult to change.
  2. 02What changes itWhich other decision could materially change the answer.
  3. 03What you can handleWhether the free tools are enough for the situation.
  4. 04Whether $750 is justifiedWhether the Tactical Financial Assessment would add enough value.

If the paid assessment would not add enough value, Joshua will tell you before you buy it.

Fair questions

What warm prospects usually want to know

“I already have an adviser.”

Good. This conversation does not require replacing anyone. Many competent advisers manage investments well but do not routinely coordinate SBP, TSP rules, military healthcare, VA income, and a first civilian compensation package on one timeline.

The question is not whether your adviser is good. It is whether somebody owns the handoff.

“My transition office covered this.”

Transition briefings explain programs and deadlines. They are not designed to coordinate your household's survivor income, assets, taxes, insurance, estate documents, and civilian compensation.

Education is necessary. Household-level sequencing is different work.

“I do not want a sales call.”

Fair. This call is meant to answer two questions: which decision window comes next, and whether formal analysis is justified.

No commissions. No product sales. No account-transfer requirement.

Why talk with Joshua

Military context matters. A written process matters more.

Joshua Brooks, CFP® is a fee-only fiduciary, Army veteran, and actively serving Army Reserve chaplain with 22 years and counting in uniform.

His process is built around the three decisions that most often collide during the handoff: survivor income, TSP structure, and civilian compensation.

The goal of the first call is not to sell an account. It is to determine whether somebody needs to own the sequence.

The entire first step

Pick a time. Bring one decision. Leave with a next step.

01

Pick a time

Choose phone or video. The scheduler asks only the questions needed to make the conversation relevant.

02

Bring one decision

No documents required. Start with the retirement date and the decision that feels least coordinated.

03

Leave with a next step

Use a free tool, move into the paid assessment, continue with an existing professional, or simply wait. It depends on the situation.

Before the signature line

The best time to coordinate an irreversible decision is before it becomes paperwork.

If retirement is inside 24 months, the calendar is already moving. Spouses are encouraged because survivor, healthcare, insurance, and estate decisions belong to both of you.
